Harvesting refers to the activity of searching and collecting metadata from Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Institutional Repositories and OAI journals whose content is indexed and posted for open use from a World Wide Web server. A metadata harvesting service harvests or indexes metadata from open access initiative (OAI) compliant archives or repositories or journals through harvesting software that supports a protocol known as the Open Access Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).
